Nokia have unveiled the N97, their answer to the iPhone.
All I can say at first glances is this phone is extremely impressive.
Compared to the iPhone, the N97 can handle Flash content, so web browsing on the device is not restricted. I still have no idea why the iPhone doesn’t have Flash capabilities built in. I thought that would have been a priority to include if you’re releasing a “killer” app phone that allows for unlimited browsing. Mr. Jobs?
The N97 has the touch screen, so you get to let your fingers do the talking, but the bonus is the slide-out QWERTY keyboard, as I can imagine texting and general text-input pn purely touch screen phones to be a hindrance (or at least much slower).
Couple that with the N-Series standard 5 Megapixel camera, and throw in 48Gb (yes, 48Gb) of storage for your media. Now I’m impressed.

The iPhone will always have a certain appeal. To be honest, I almost upgraded 7 months early of my contract end-date to get one. Now I’m quite happy to have waited. The N97 will be released in the first half of next year (all going well), and seeing as my contract is up in June, and I’m currently using the N95 which I think is a powerful phone anyway and therefore a closet fan of Nokia phones, this should hopefully be released at the time I get an upgrade.
Apple. You have 7 months to sort out the iPhone. Put Flash on it. Release a few more update packages for the firmware, and get it in a working, stable position. Then you might have a deal. But for now, I’m focusing on the N97.

“I still have no idea why the iPhone doesn’t have Flash capabilities built in.” Because Mr. Jobs won’t allow it. He says Flash is too slow. I heard that Adobe has a Flash player ready for the iPhone, but they are still fighting with Jobs to get it into the App store.
Hi Jake
That Mr. Jobs, eh? Tsk.. what a tricky little business man he is. If the software is there ready for deployment, surely it should be made available for the end users? It may slow down the phone or the browsing experience, but the choice should be with the user if they want to install it or not.
Without the plugin, Apple have limited the browsing experience of iPhone users.
For shame, Apple. For shame.
@Guy – I’m sorry. You’re great comment got lost in the stupid spam filter.
I agree with you though. Nokia does have some way to go. My N95 also suffers random restarts and occasional blackouts. They do need to perform some work on the firmware updates to try to ensure this doesn’t happen.
It can be a royal pain in the A. I also have issues with the phone physically turned on, showing signal, but friends and family have not been able to phone me, saying it goes straight to voicemail as if the phone was off.
Maybe I should go for the G1 instead? Any thoughts?
Ahh cmon on already the N range for Nokia is pants i’ve had 2 N range phones and they have both been abysmal.. Battery life is poor, random restarts, wiping of phone contact twice even after phone updates of firmware. Constantly and sporadically getting random things happen… i.e missed calls can’t access or wipes clean, phone gets stuck in like a white nokia screen of death (equivilant to the pc blue screen of death). Photos and phone no’s randomly go missing.
I quite like the sony ericsson x1 model but not sure what the usability is like. but there was another ericsson due out out last last year which took my fancy too. just can’t remember the model no.
